![]() It was the summer of 2012 and we noticed him limping a little bit. We learned this term when our son, Aedan, was 4 years old. Since english isn't my first language, I apologize for any gramatical, orthographical and / or stylistic mistakes. Coxa vara is a hip condition in which there is a discrepancy of the growth in the round ball of the hip and the upper end of the thigh bone, creating a deformity. Apparently the doctor implemented everything exactly as proposed by Leonie in Anja’s patient file. For additional support of her limbs, metal poles similar to a halo brace where mounted to her arms and legs. Traction devices fixed with multiple layers of plaster to her hands and feet prevented any ever so small movement in her fingers and toes. The reason why she felt so hot were additional layers of plaster over her torso, shoulders and hips to stabilize the cast. Her jaw was freshly wired and held in place by a monstrous new headgear. She was not only still in her old cast, it was even worse: To prevent any minor movement to her jaw, the doctors crammed bandages and additional padding between her cast and her head. As she opened her eyes and realized what happened, she burst out in tears and started to sob uncontrollable. The doctor moved her to the examination room and injected her a sedative, but out of joy that she’d finally be released, Anja didn’t even realize the reason.Īs the sedative wore off and Anja awoke, she needed a moment to get her thoughts together. As the doctor stated that Anja’s treatment would be re-examined immediately, her heart skipped a beat out of excitement. ![]() Anja took from the Doctor’s tangled explanations that she was also responsible for Leonie’s hospitalization and therefore would take care of Anja from now on. A stern looking black haired woman introduced herself as Leonies supervisor. Even though she was still trapped in her encasing hull, the newly won movement felt like progress to her.įinally, at the end of the summer, someone took notice of her. Although her head was holy firmly in place by the halo brace, she was able to move her jaw somewhat, which in turn loosened her headgear. Anja’s only glimmer of hope was that her sweat drenched cast slowly wore out, and it was finally possible for her to slightly stretch her toes and fingers. The Full Body Cast’s production of Rocky Horror is an essential part of maintaining this sentiment in Boston and remains an experience that every Bostonian should have. Splints are also called half-casts and provide less support than casts. Casts are often made from fiberglass or plaster. They help to immobilize the injured limb to keep the bone in place until it fully heals. While the nurses continued taking care of her on their regular rounds, her patient file remained untouched and she seemed to be forgotten for the summer by doctors and other supervisors.Īs the summer passed without any changes to her treatment, her desperation grew only stronger. Casts and splints are orthopedic devices that are used to protect and support fractured or injured bones and joints. Her initial joy faded quickly however, as she realized now with Leonie gone, there was no one responsible for her. But even this variety stopped one day, and Leonie managed to figure out why as she overheard some gossiping nurses: Apparently Leonie itself was now a patient in the hospital. Frequently Leonie modified Anja’s patient file by extending her treatment plan, hushing up her healing progress or outright adding further injuries to the file, all to keep Anja in her helpless state a bit longer. The only dreaded variety was the appearance of Leonie every few days. With the never changing rhythm of various nurses taking care of her, turning on Netflix in the morning and turning of the lights in the evening, weeks blurred into each other. Due to various painkillers and sedatives, her sense of time completely faded. Sweat, throbbing pain, boredom and general discomfort were just some of her problems. ![]() Despite the climatized hospital room, she sweated constantly in her plaster shell. a whole summer in a cast that covered every inch of your body and prevents any movement certainly wasn’t something you could get accustomed to, but Anja tried her best.
